UFC 146 set after Roy Nelson vs. Gabriel Gonzaga added

The UFC 146 dominoes have finally stopped falling, as the all-heavyweight main card is set. Roy Nelson will face Gabriel Gonzaga and Shane Del Rosario will fight Stipe Miocic.

The shake-up started on Friday, when Alistair Overeem withdrew from the title bout with Junior dos Santos after a pre-fight test showed elevated levels of testosterone. Overeem said he wanted time to resolve the issue with the Nevada Athletic Commission, but that left dos Santos without an opponent and UFC 146 without a main event.

Frank Mir stepped into the title fight, Antonio Silva was given the bout with Cain Velasquez, Nelson got Gonzaga, and Miocic, who was not originally on the card, stepped up to fight Del Rosario.

What do you think of the updates to the card? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

‘The Voice’: Adam Levine Sends Home Fan Favorite

Pip and James Massone are sent packing, while Cee Lo performs new Goodie Mob single.

The quarterfinals continued Monday night (April 23) on “The Voice” with the eight members of Teams Cee Lo and Adam taking the stage to sing for America’s vote, and two contestants were sent home by their judges’ instant eliminations.

You know times have changed when Carson Daly — former host of MTV’s teenage staple “TRL” — is the adult in the room, as he was at the start of the show when a little juvenile humor distracted the coaches. After Adam and Cee Lo had a tough time getting through their opening remarks about the seriousness of the competition without laughing, Carson got Cee Lo to confess that the panel was laughing because he was, well, a little gassy. “Well, this is live TV,” Carson observed with what sounded like a little bit of disappointment in his voice. (Right?)

The night’s first two performances set the bar high for the rest.

First up was favorite Jamar Roger, singing Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.” While rehearsing the song, Jamar told Cee Lo his “Just a Thought” helped him through an especially hard time in his life, when he was getting clean from drugs and learned he was HIV-positive. The obvious bond between the two made Cee Lo’s words of praise in the theater all the more moving.

“I want to pause for a moment and listen to the love,” Cee Lo said to a teary-eyed Rogers of the audience’s wild reaction. “That’s your love.”

Katrina Parker, who was saved earlier in the competition by her coach Adam, turned up the glam factor in a purple gown and loose waves for her powerful performance of “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri. (Can you even believe it was only two months ago that we were introduced to a shy insurance office worker?) She sounded great and won raves from each of the judges. Cee Lo agreed with Blake that this performance was like “hearing you for the very first time,” adding, “You look exceptionally beautiful, your voice sounded equally flawless.” Adam summed it up by calling Parker’s performance “flawless.”

Cee Lo kicked it old-school right from the beginning with Daly’s black-and-white, ’50s game show host-style intro for his team performance of “Dancing in the Streets.” When the lights came up, Cee Lo and his teammates were inside a vintage TV set before busting out onto a stage lit up with vivid colored polka dots and stripes. Cee Lo even tossed on a wig for the occasion. The weird and cool energy (and colors, come to think of it) was reminiscent of Cee Lo’s Muppet-heavy 2011 Grammy performance of “Forget You,” and every time the camera cut to the other judges, they were eating it up.

Mathai’s performance of “I’m Like a Bird” was more notable for Aguilera’s dissing of Adam for not paying enough attention to all elements of his team’s staging — none of the judges, even Adam, cared for an odd bit of choreography — and getting booed for elaborating a little too honestly on how much more she preferred Parker’s performance.

Team Cee Lo’s James Massone carried his clean-cut lady killer act a little too far into ’60s boy-band territory, crooning Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are” staged like a teenybopper movie with Massone singing below a girl’s window. Blake and Xtina didn’t love it, but Adam saw what Cee Lo was going for, something “like a young Sinatra, like an old-school heartthrob.”

Thankfully, Cee Lo jumped back in to liven things up with his reunited Goodie Mob, performing their new single “Fight to Win.” Just when you thought the performance would be low-key by Cee Lo standards — you know, just the band clad in gold armor and capes, with a set of light-up stairs, pillars and lots of fog — they zoomed in on Cee Lo and his bandmates’ mouths, which lit up bright with some kind of mouthpiece.

After Tony Lucca’s last performance, Christina commented that she thought he was coasting on his easy acoustic-rocker style and the bit of celebrity that comes with having co-starred with her on “The Mickey Mouse Club,” and his desire to prove her wrong and “stare down” his “Mickey Mouse” past pushed him to remix Britney Spears’ ” … Baby One More Time” as a rip-roaring rock song.

His electric take on Spears’ bubblegum classic won all the judges over, including (finally!) Xtina, who called for an “MMC” reunion and cheered on how he made the song his own.

Saved previously by Cee Lo, Cheesa took a risk, performing the late Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” Those are big vocal shoes to fill, and she delivered. “You still managed to do your own thing with it,” Christina raved, before declaring, “This week, Team Cee Lo is where it’s at.” Sorry, Adam!

Next up, preppy Pip showed off his piano skills with his reliably capable, definitely theatrical (we agree with Adam) but unremarkable performance of “Somewhere Only We Know,” and Juliette Simms’ shredded growl was perfect for Aerosmith’s “Cryin’,” even if the wings she wore weren’t our favorite accessories of the evening.

Adam jumped behind the drums for his team’s performance of “Instant Karma,” and unlike the other joint coach/team performances, Levine let his team lead this one. His four remaining contestants took turns with the lead vocal, while Pip played keyboard and Tony strummed his ever-present guitar.

But two had to go, leaving Cee Lo and Adam with a tough decision to make. Ever the diplomat, Cee Lo wrote a nice speech for his team, addressing how difficult this is for him and how much he supports each of them and read it off his phone. He decided to send James Massone packing, and the young Boston guy took it pretty well. (But it’s pretty impossible to get mad at Cee Lo, right?) Adam was admittedly less elegant with his words and ultimately decided to send home Pip, who seemed at first a little surprised but bowed out gracefully.

LG Optimus 3D Max launches in Europe, won’t be coming to the UK

LG Optimus 3D Max launches today in Germany, not coming to the UK

For those that still keen to dabble with the world of 3D we’ve got some good and some bad news. While the Optimus 3D Max has made its first arrival in Europe, launching in Germany today, it looks like the phone won’t be docking at British ports. A spokesperson at LG told us there were currently no plans to bring the device across to the UK, although its L-style series and the quad-core flagship, the Optimus 4X HD, look set to receive wider adoption. The Optimus 3D Max is the brutally carb-free version of LG’s original 3D phone, now lighter and thinner but still gnawing on last year’s Android Gingerbread. Pricing hasn’t been announced for Germany, but LG tells us that it will be on the premium end of the smartphone scale, with pricing dependent on carriers. You get the full view of the hardware and its three-dimensional chops in the press release after the break. Active shutter glasses not required.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 review

Image

It doesn’t feel like a year has passed since we reviewed the original ASUS Transformer and its innovative keyboard dock, but indeed time flies, and quite a bit has happened since then. The company has released the Prime, for starters, followed by two other high-end models. And now, the OG Transformer is going the way of the dodo, as the affordable new Transformer Pad 300 (aka the TF300) takes its place. Though this newest tablet was announced back in February, it’s only just going on sale in the US this week, starting at $379 for the 16GB version, and $399 for one with 32GB of built-in storage.

In addition to the fact that this replaces a truly memorable product, the TF300 is intriguing because it represents an even better deal for consumers: it borrows some design cues from the higher-end Prime, and also steps up to a similar 8-megapixel camera. Like the Prime, too, it runs an unskinned version of Android 4.0 and packs a quad-core Tegra 3 chip — something you don’t often see in a tablet this price. In short, the main differences between this and the Prime are battery life (10 hours versus 12), and the quality of the display (the 10-inch screen here offers 350 nits of brightness instead of 600). Those all sound like reasonable trade-offs and, frankly, they are. That’s our abridged review, over and done with in just two paragraphs, but meet us past the break if you’re craving a little more detail.

Travis Browne and Matt Brown highlight UFC 145 preliminary card

UFC 145′s preliminary card wasn’t one to remember, though Travis Browne, Matt Brown and Chris Clements gave memorable performances in Atlanta on Saturday night.

Travis Browne pulled out the submission of the night with a triangle choke of Chad Griggs in the first round. Browne knocked Griggs to the ground with knees, then used a textbook choke to take out Griggs at 2:29 in the first.

Despite tiring out early, Matt Brown stopped the quick ascent of Stephen Thompson with a unanimous decision. The judges saw it 30-27, 29-27, 30-27 for Brown. Matt Brown grabbed a calf slicer in the first round, but Thompson worked his way out. In the second, Thompson controlled most of the round, landing shots as an exhausted Brown couldn’t answer, until the final minute. Brown knocked Thompson to the ground with an elbow, then used ground and pound until the round ended. Those elbows opened a large cut on Brown’s forehead. Thompson had better stand-up early in the third, but Brown’s takedown and triangle choke late in the third round kept Thompson from fighting back.

Unsurprisingly, Anthony Njokuani and John Makdessi’s bout turned into a kicking contest, with Njokuani taking the bout 30-27 on all three judges’ cards. Njokuani kept his distance while landing kicks to the abdomen and legs of Makdessi. Makdessi could never move inside enough to actually get some offense.

On an injured ankle, Mac Danzig won a decision 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 over Efrain Escudero. Escudero caught Danzig with a heel hook early, but Danzig defended by spinning out and taking Escudero’s back before they returned to their feet in the first round. Danzig used a clinch in the second to control Escudero. On an ankle severely swollen from the heel hook, Danzig came out strong in the third, somehow having good movement. He returned to the clinch, again controlling Escudero against the fence.

Chris Clements won an exciting, back and forth split decision with Keith Wisniewski, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28. Wisniewski got a takedown early in the first round as well as a big forehead cut. After an inexplicable stand-up, Clements knocked Wisniewski to the ground with a spinning back kick to the body. In the second round, Wisniewski took Clements back to try for a rear naked choke, but Clements threw elbows into Wisniewski’s face. Clements had a much better third round, landing shot after shot that Wisniewski had no answer for.

A lackluster bout started the card in Atlanta, as Marcus Brimage and Maximo Blanco never truly found an offensive attack. Brimage was able to use kicks? to get a bit of an edge, but seemed unsatisfied with his 29-28,? 28-29, 29-28 win.? Afterwards, he and Blanco got into a very odd tumble-off.

Gillmor Gang: Scoble?s Magic Penny

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? Robert Scoble, John Taschek, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, and Steve Gillmor ? drunk on power and app-pacified to the max, a pathetic unanimity in search of an argument, a raised eyebrow less than a real opinion… You get the idea; Keith Teare’s stellar Techcrunch post of last Sunday on Google’s earning call click problem seemed like a great place to continue a comment argument with @kevinmarks. But lo and behold, it’s not Web or Apps but both. HTML5 may turn out to be the least relevant part of this refactoring of the world around mobile. Hindsight or HipSwitch or Turncoat, the names don’t matter but the services do. Some people (like me) will do anything to avoid searching for an answer, and apps are just what I am looking for: touch and tap services orchestrated via push notification and intelligent predictive caching. Or not.
